Six nights with a quieter middle. After two nights in Shimla, we head into the Parvati valley for two nights by the river at Kasol, close to the hot springs and langar of Manikaran Sahib, then go on to Manali for Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel. Going via Kasol splits the long Shimla–Manali drive in two. It suits couples, friends and young families.
Day 1Chandigarh – Shimla (2 Nights)
About 115 km · 3.5–4 hours by road
Welcome to Himachal. Your driver meets you at Chandigarh airport and we drive north past Pinjore and Kalka, climbing through pine forest towards Shimla, with a tea stop on the way. After check-in, walk up to the Mall Road in the evening, closed to traffic, and on to the Ridge, where Christ Church stands at one end and on a clear evening the snow peaks line the horizon. Browse the old shops along the Mall, then return to the hotel for dinner. Overnight in Shimla.

- Note: Cars can't drive on the Mall Road. You walk up or take the public lift from Cart Road for a small fee.

Day 2Shimla
After breakfast we drive about 16 km to Kufri, a high ridge with wide views on a clear morning; ponies take you up to Mahasu Peak if you like. Back in Shimla, climb to Jakhoo Temple on the highest point of the town, with its giant Hanuman statue, then explore the colonial heart of Shimla: the Mall, Scandal Point, the Gaiety Theatre and Christ Church. If you have time, drive out to the Viceregal Lodge at Summer Hill, now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, for its gardens and guided tour. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Shimla.

Day 3Shimla – Kasol (2 Nights)
About 210 km · 6–7 hours by road
We leave after breakfast and drive down through Bilaspur and Sundernagar to Mandi, then up the Beas past Pandoh Dam and through the Aut tunnel. At Bhuntar we turn off into the Parvati valley, a narrower, greener valley where the road follows the river through pine forest and small villages. By late afternoon you reach your riverside stay at Kasol, with the sound of the Parvati in the background. The evening is yours to walk along the river or through the small market. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Kasol.

Day 4Kasol
A slow local day. In the morning we drive about 4 km up the valley to Manikaran Sahib, a gurdwara built beside natural hot springs, where the water bubbles out so hot that rice and dal for the langar are cooked in it. Join the langar for lunch, and visit the Ram Temple next door. In the afternoon, walk from Kasol across the bridge and along the river to Chalal village, an easy forest trail of about 30–45 minutes each way. Evening by the river. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Kasol.

- Note: At Manikaran Sahib, cover your head and remove your shoes; head scarves are available at the entrance.
- Note: Longer walks to Tosh or Kheerganga are full-day treks and can be arranged with a local guide, paid locally.
Prafull’s tipGo to Manikaran by 10 am, before the crowds and the heat build. Offer to help in the langar kitchen if you'd like to; it's welcomed.

Day 5Kasol – Manali (2 Nights)
About 75 km · 2.5 hours by road
After breakfast we drive back down the Parvati valley to Bhuntar and up the Kullu valley to Manali, arriving by lunchtime. Check in, then spend the afternoon around town. Start at Hadimba Devi Temple, a 16th-century wooden temple in a grove of tall deodars, then walk up to Old Manali, with its stone-and-timber houses, apple orchards and riverside cafés. If there's time, drive across to Vashisht for its old temples and hot springs. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Manali.

Day 6Manali
About 45 km each way to Sissu · 1.5–2 hours, longer in traffic
A day up the valley. We drive about 14 km to Solang Valley, a wide meadow below the snow peaks, for the ropeway, paragliding in season or snow play in winter and spring. Then on through the Atal Tunnel, over 9 km long under the Pir Panjal range, into Lahaul, where the landscape changes completely to bare, high mountains and the Chandra river. Stop at Sissu for its waterfall and lake before the drive back. Spend the evening on the Mall Road. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Manali.

- Solang ropeway
- Atal Tunnel
- Sissu

- Note: Ropeway, paragliding, ATV and snow-gear hire at Solang are optional and paid locally.
- Note: If local rules or snow on the day require a Manali union taxi for Solang or the Atal Tunnel, we arrange it and the cost is paid locally.
Prafull’s tipLeave by 8 am. The queues at Solang and the tunnel build quickly after 10, especially on weekends.

Day 7Manali – Chandigarh – Departure
About 300 km · 8–9 hours by road
An early breakfast and we drive down the Kullu valley and back through Mandi and Bilaspur to the plains, stopping for lunch on the way. The views fade gently from snow peaks to pine hills to the plains, and there are good dhabas for tea at Mandi and near Swarghat. Your driver drops you at Chandigarh airport in time for an evening flight. If you'd rather skip the long drive, we can book you a flight from Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali airport), about 50 km from Manali, on request. Your holiday ends here. Thank you for travelling with TripRoutes.

- Mandi
- Note: Book a flight from Chandigarh after 6 pm. Flights from Bhuntar are few and weather-dependent.
Prafull’s tipLeave Manali by 6.30 am to be past Kullu before the traffic.

Good to know
- The Shimla–Kasol drive is about 6–7 hours and Manali–Chandigarh about 8–9. Carry snacks, water and anything for motion sickness.
- Kasol is a small village with simple, comfortable stays rather than big hotels. It can be lively on weekends; tell us if you'd like somewhere quieter.
- At Manikaran Sahib, cover your head and remove your shoes. Alcohol and tobacco are not allowed in the gurdwara complex.
- In winter (December–February), snow can close the Atal Tunnel road and Solang for a day or two. We adjust the plan on the spot.
- Pure-veg food is easy everywhere in Himachal, and Jain meals are possible at most hotels with advance notice.
- Pack warm layers in every season and good walking shoes for Chalal and Old Manali. Mobile signal fades in parts of the Parvati valley.
When to go
March to June, and September to November. Clear, pleasant weather in spring and autumn. July and August bring heavy rain and landslides; December to February brings snow and some closed roads.
