Itinerary (day wise)
A gentle pilgrimage through Tamil Nadu's great temples, from Madurai's Meenakshi Amman to Rameswaram's Ramanathaswamy and on to India's southern tip at Kanyakumari. The route runs south and then along the coast, so no day doubles back, and the drive ends near Trivandrum airport. It suits parents, pilgrims and families who want darshan without hurry.
Day 1Arrive Madurai (1 Night)
About 12 km from the airport · 30 minutes
Your driver meets you at Madurai airport and takes you to your hotel in a private car. Rest through the afternoon heat. Around 5 pm you go to the Meenakshi Amman Temple with a local guide, entering under one of its towering gopurams covered in painted gods and demons. Inside you walk the pillared halls, see the Golden Lotus Tank and join the queue for darshan. After dinner you can return for the night ceremony, when Lord Sundareswarar is carried in a palanquin to Meenakshi's chamber with drums and nadaswaram. Overnight in Madurai.
- Meenakshi Amman Temple
- Golden Lotus Tank
- Night ceremony (Palliyarai)

- Note: Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temple; leave them in the car or at the counters outside.
- Note: Special-darshan tickets shorten the queue and are paid at the temple.
Prafull’s tipEnter by the east gate in the evening. The light on the gopurams is warm and the halls are cooler.
Dinner
Day 2Madurai – Rameswaram (2 Nights)
About 170 km · 3.5–4 hours by road
After breakfast you drive east across the flat, palm-dotted Ramanathapuram plains to the coast. The road crosses to Pamban island on a long bridge over the sea, with fishing boats below and the railway bridge running alongside. Check in at your Rameswaram hotel and rest. In the late afternoon you visit Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve jyotirlingas, and walk its corridors, among the longest in any Indian temple, lined with carved pillars and painted ceilings. Evening darshan, then back to the hotel for dinner. Overnight in Rameswaram.
- Pamban bridge
- Ramanathaswamy Temple
- Temple corridors
- Note: Phones and cameras are not allowed inside Ramanathaswamy Temple.
- Note: The temple closes for a few hours in the early afternoon; we plan the visit around it.
Prafull’s tipAsk your driver to slow down on the bridge. The view of the sea on both sides is worth the photo.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 3Rameswaram
An early start for the theertham bath inside Ramanathaswamy Temple: priests pour water from 22 sacred wells over you, one by one, before you change into dry clothes for darshan. After breakfast you drive out to Dhanushkodi, stopping at the Kothandaramaswamy temple on the way. The road runs along a thin strip of sand between two seas to the ruins of the church and railway station left by the 1964 cyclone, and on to Arichal Munai at the very tip. In the afternoon you see the APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial and the Panchamukhi Hanuman temple. Overnight in Rameswaram.
- 22 theertham bath
- Kothandaramaswamy Temple
- Dhanushkodi
- Arichal Munai
- APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial
- Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple
- Note: Wear clothes you don't mind getting soaked for the theertham bath, and carry a change in a bag.
- Note: Dhanushkodi is open in daylight only, and the police may close the road in rough weather.
Prafull’s tipGo to Dhanushkodi by 10 am. The sand and sun get fierce by noon and there is little shade.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 4Rameswaram – Kanyakumari (2 Nights)
About 300 km · 5–6 hours by road
After breakfast you leave Pamban island and drive south down the coast through Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi, past salt pans, palmyra palms and wind farms. A lunch stop breaks the drive; if you'd like, we stop at the seaside Murugan temple at Tiruchendur on the way. You reach Kanyakumari, at the meeting of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, by late afternoon. After checking in you go down to the sunset point to watch the sun go down over the water. Overnight in Kanyakumari.
- Coastal Tamil Nadu
- Tiruchendur Murugan Temple (optional)
- Kanyakumari sunset point
- Note: The Tiruchendur stop adds about 1.5–2 hours to the day.
Prafull’s tipAsk for a sea-facing room in Kanyakumari. You can watch tomorrow's sunrise from your window.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 5Kanyakumari
Wake before dawn to watch the sunrise over the sea from the beach or your hotel. After breakfast you take the ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, where Swami Vivekananda meditated in 1892; a glass footbridge now joins it to the tall Thiruvalluvar Statue on the next rock. Back on shore you visit the Kumari Amman Temple and the Gandhi Mandapam. After lunch and a rest, you drive about 12 km to Suchindram's Thanumalayan Temple, known for its musical pillars and tall Hanuman. Overnight in Kanyakumari.
- Sunrise at Kanyakumari
- Vivekananda Rock Memorial
- Thiruvalluvar Statue
- Kumari Amman Temple
- Gandhi Mandapam
- Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple

- Note: The ferry runs from about 8 am to 4 pm and can be suspended in rough seas. Queues are long in season, so we go early.
- Note: Men remove their shirts to enter the Kumari Amman and Suchindram temples.
Prafull’s tipTake the first ferry. By mid-morning the queue can run past an hour in December and January.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 6Kanyakumari – Departure
About 90 km to Trivandrum airport · 2.5 hours
Breakfast at leisure, with one more look at the sea. Then you drive north-west into Kerala, through green villages, coconut groves and paddy fields. If your flight is later in the day, you can stop at Padmanabhapuram Palace, the old wooden palace of the Travancore kings, with its carved ceilings and cool polished floors. If your flight is early, we skip the palace and drive straight to the airport, with a stop for tea on the way. Your driver drops you at Trivandrum airport in good time for your flight home. Your holiday ends here.
- Padmanabhapuram Palace (optional)
- Note: Padmanabhapuram Palace is closed on Mondays.
- Note: Allow at least five hours between leaving Kanyakumari and your flight if you add the palace.
Prafull’s tipBuy banana chips and halwa on the Kerala side of the border. The small family shops near the palace are good.

Good to know
- October to March is the best time. April to June is very hot, and the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from about mid-October to December.
- Temples ask for modest, traditional clothes: no shorts or sleeveless tops. Shoes come off at the gate, and some temples ask men to remove their shirts before entering.
- Phones and cameras are not allowed inside Meenakshi or Ramanathaswamy temples. Carry very little into the temples; we keep the rest in the car.
- Pure-veg food is easy to find in all three towns, and Rameswaram is largely vegetarian. Jain food can be arranged with notice.
- Rameswaram and Kanyakumari are pilgrim towns with no luxury hotels; we pick the cleanest, best-run places available.
- For parents: temple visits mean standing in queues and walking barefoot on stone. We plan darshan for cooler hours and can arrange wheelchairs at the larger temples.
When to go
October to March. Pleasant, mostly dry weather for temples and coast. Tamil Nadu gets its main rains from October to December, usually in short bursts; April to June is hot.
