Itinerary (day wise)

A short, easy South India holiday from Bengaluru: two nights in Mysuru for its palace and old royal sights, then two in a Coorg coffee estate among the hills. Mysuru comes first because it sits on the way, and Coorg's cool, quiet estate days make a gentle finish. Drives are about three hours, so it suits parents, families and couples.

Day 1

Bengaluru – Mysuru (2 Nights)

About 180 km from the airport · 3.5–4.5 hours by road

Your driver meets you at Bengaluru airport and takes you south on the Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway in a private car. Just before Mysuru you stop at Srirangapatna, the island fort of Tipu Sultan on the Kaveri, to see the Ranganathaswamy temple and Daria Daulat Bagh, his teak summer palace with painted walls. Check in at your Mysuru hotel and rest. In the evening you drive past Mysuru Palace; on Sundays and public holidays it is lit with nearly a lakh bulbs, and on other evenings a sound-and-light show runs in the grounds. Overnight in Mysuru.

  • Srirangapatna
  • Ranganathaswamy Temple
  • Daria Daulat Bagh
  • Mysuru Palace (evening)
  • Note: The palace illumination runs on Sundays and public holidays, about 7 to 7.45 pm, and every evening during Dasara.
  • Note: If your flight lands late, we move Srirangapatna to the morning of day 2.

Prafull’s tipIf you can, plan your dates so day 1 or day 2 falls on a Sunday. The lit palace is the sight people remember.

Dinner

Day 2

Mysuru

After breakfast you visit Mysuru Palace with a local guide when it opens at 10 am: the Durbar Hall's carved pillars, the stained-glass Kalyana Mantapa and the painted processions of the Dasara festival. Then up Chamundi Hill to the Chamundeshwari temple, with a stop at the great black stone Nandi on the way down. After lunch you see St Philomena's Church, with its tall Gothic spires, and walk through Devaraja Market for jasmine, betel leaves and sandalwood. In the evening you drive out to Brindavan Gardens below the Krishnaraja Sagar dam for its lit fountains. Overnight in Mysuru.

  • Mysuru Palace
  • Chamundi Hill
  • Nandi statue
  • St Philomena's Church
  • Devaraja Market
  • Brindavan Gardens
  • Note: Shoes are left at the counter and photography is not allowed inside the palace.
  • Note: Brindavan Gardens' musical fountain runs in the evenings; timings change by season and it is sometimes closed for maintenance, so we check on the day.

Prafull’s tipBuy Mysore pak and sandalwood soap at the government emporiums, not the roadside shops. Quality and prices are fixed.

Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3

Mysuru – Coorg (2 Nights)

About 120 km · 3 hours by road

After breakfast you drive west through farmland and sugarcane towards the Western Ghats. Near Kushalnagar you stop at Bylakuppe, one of India's largest Tibetan settlements, to visit the Namdroling Monastery, known as the Golden Temple for the three tall gilded statues in its main hall. Monks in maroon robes cross the courtyards, and the prayer halls are open to visitors. Then the road climbs gently into Coorg, through coffee and pepper country, to your estate stay. The afternoon is free to rest on the verandah with a cup of estate coffee. Overnight in Coorg.

  • Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple)
  • Bylakuppe Tibetan settlement
  • Coorg coffee country
  • Note: The last stretch climbs; we switch the car's AC off on steep sections.
  • Note: Optional: Dubare Elephant Camp on the Kaveri, best visited early in the morning; ask us to fit it into day 4.

Prafull’s tipBylakuppe's Tibetan cafés serve good momos and thukpa. Have a light lunch there rather than at a highway stop.

Breakfast & Dinner

Day 4

Coorg

The morning starts with a guided walk through the plantation, where you see coffee bushes growing under tall shade trees wound with pepper vines, and learn how the beans are picked, dried and cured. After breakfast you drive to Abbey Falls, a short walk down through coffee and cardamom to a hanging bridge facing the water. In Madikeri you see the Omkareshwara Temple and the old fort. After lunch and a rest, you end the day at Raja's Seat, the garden where Kodagu's kings watched the sun set over the folded hills. Overnight in Coorg.

  • Coffee plantation walk
  • Abbey Falls
  • Omkareshwara Temple
  • Madikeri Fort
  • Raja's Seat
Pamban Bridge, Rameswaram
Pamban Bridge, Rameswaram
  • Note: Abbey Falls is fullest from July to November. The path down has steps; parents can take it slowly or wait at the top.
  • Note: Optional: Talacauvery, the source of the Kaveri, about 45 km from Madikeri, as a half-day out.

Prafull’s tipBuy coffee, pepper and homemade wine at the estate itself. It is fresher and cheaper than in Madikeri's shops.

Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5

Coorg – Departure

About 5–6 hours to Bengaluru airport, or 3.5–4 hours to Mangaluru airport

A last breakfast on the estate with the mist lifting off the hills. Then your driver takes you to the airport that suits your flight: east to Bengaluru, back past Mysuru on the expressway, or west down the ghats to Mangaluru, which is closer. For a Bengaluru flight we leave by mid-morning; for Mangaluru there is time for a slow start. Lunch is on the way at a clean highway restaurant. Your driver drops you at the departure terminal for your flight home. Your holiday ends here.

  • Note: For an evening flight from Bengaluru, keep at least seven hours between leaving Coorg and take-off, as city traffic is unpredictable.

Prafull’s tipIf you have the choice, fly out of Mangaluru. The drive down the ghats is shorter and much prettier.

Good to know

  • Mysuru is warm all year (about 20–32°C). Coorg is cooler, and from June to September it rains heavily; pack a light jacket and an umbrella.
  • Temples ask for modest, traditional clothes: no shorts or sleeveless tops. Shoes come off at the gate, and some temples ask men to remove their shirts before entering.
  • Food is easy for vegetarians: south Indian veg meals are everywhere. Coorg's own cuisine is known for pork, so ask the estate for veg or Jain food in advance.
  • For parents: walking is light, but Chamundi temple and Abbey Falls have steps. Every visit can be kept short.
  • Coorg estates can have patchy mobile signal and Wi-Fi; most have it in the main building.
  • Carry original photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence) for hotel check-in and flights.

When to go

October to March. Pleasant, mostly dry weather for temples and coast. Tamil Nadu gets its main rains from October to December, usually in short bursts; April to June is hot.
