Itinerary (day wise)

Our Bali for couples, in private pool villas from start to finish: three nights in the Ubud jungle, two in the cool highlands of Munduk among lakes and waterfalls, and two on the cliffs of Uluwatu. The route climbs from Ubud through the Jatiluwih terraces to the hills, then comes down to the sea for the last two days, close to the airport. Days are slow, with only one early start.

Day 1

Arrive Denpasar – Ubud (3 Nights)

About 38 km · 1–1.5 hours by road

Welcome to Bali. Your driver meets you outside arrivals at Ngurah Rai airport with a name board for the drive of about 1.5 hours up to Ubud, through the craft villages of Batubulan and Mas. Check in to your pool villa above the river valley, where the only sounds are the water and the insects. Have dinner in the villa or take a short drive into Ubud, where there are good vegetarian and Indian restaurants. Tell the villa tonight what time you would like your breakfast. Overnight in Ubud.

  • Batubulan and Mas craft villages

  • Note: Keep your e-VOA and Bali tourist levy receipts on your phone; they may be checked on arrival.

Prafull’s tipAsk for a villa on the valley edge when we confirm the booking. The view at dawn, with mist in the gorge, is the reason to stay here.

No meals included today

Day 2

Ubud

The trip's one early start. You reach the Tegallalang rice terraces at about 7 am, while the light is soft and the paths are empty, then drive on to Tirta Empul at Tampaksiring, the spring temple where Balinese families bathe under carved spouts. Lunch is on your own in Ubud. In the afternoon, Ubud Palace, the lotus pond of Pura Taman Saraswati and the art market for silver and textiles. Back at the villa by late afternoon for a swim as the light goes. Overnight in Ubud.

  • Tegallalang rice terraces
  • Tirta Empul temple
  • Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung)
  • Pura Taman Saraswati
  • Ubud Art Market
  • Note: Optional: Balinese dance at Ubud Palace most evenings, approx. IDR 100,000 per person.

Prafull’s tipSkip the paid swings at Tegallalang. The best photographs are from the lower terraces, early, with nobody in them.

Breakfast

Day 3

Ubud

A slow, indulgent day. Breakfast is served floating in your pool at the hour you chose. Mid-morning, a private Balinese cooking class with a local cook, starting with a walk through the village market to buy spices and vegetables; lunch is what you make, and it is easy to keep vegetarian. In the afternoon you have a Balinese spa ritual of about two hours for the two of you: massage, body scrub and a flower bath. The evening is yours, in the villa or in town. Overnight in Ubud.

  • Floating breakfast
  • Village market
  • Private Balinese cooking class
  • Balinese spa ritual
  • Note: Tell us about Jain or no-onion-garlic needs in advance so the cook can plan the menu.

Prafull’s tipAsk the cook for the sambal matah recipe. It is simple, fresh and easy to make at home.

Breakfast & Lunch

Day 4

Ubud – Munduk via Jatiluwih (2 Nights)

About 85 km · 3–3.5 hours with stops

You head west to Pura Taman Ayun at Mengwi, a royal temple of tiered shrines inside a moat. Then up to Jatiluwih, where you walk for about an hour on the terraces that form part of Bali's UNESCO-listed subak landscape, the thousand-year-old system of shared water channels. Lunch, at your own cost, overlooking the fields, then on through the hills and clove gardens to Munduk. Check in to your villa; evenings here are cool and very quiet. Overnight in Munduk.

  • Pura Taman Ayun
  • Jatiluwih rice terraces
  • Munduk village
  • Note: Jatiluwih charges a visitor entry fee, included in your trip.

Prafull’s tipPack a light jacket for Munduk. After the warmth of Ubud, the hill evenings feel fresh.

Breakfast

Day 5

Munduk

Early to Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, the temple that seems to float on Lake Bratan, about 30 minutes away, before the day visitors arrive. Then the Wanagiri viewpoint, which looks over the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan in their forested crater. In the afternoon, a local guide walks you through clove and coffee gardens to the Munduk and Melanting waterfalls. Allow two to three hours; the paths have steps and can be slippery after rain. Back at the villa for tea with a view. Overnight in Munduk.

  • Note: Wear shoes with grip for the waterfall walk; sandals are not enough.

Prafull’s tipUlun Danu Beratan is at its stillest before 8.30 am, when mist often lifts off the lake.

Breakfast

Day 6

Munduk – Uluwatu (2 Nights)

About 100 km · 3.5–4 hours by road

A slow breakfast with the valley view, then the longest drive of the trip, down out of the hills and south to the Bukit peninsula, with a stop for lunch on the way. The road winds past rice fields and villages before the busier stretch around Denpasar. Check in to your clifftop villa above the Indian Ocean and keep the rest of the day for the pool and the sunset, which on these cliffs drops straight into the sea. Overnight in Uluwatu.

  • Bukit peninsula
  • Uluwatu cliffs
Sunset on the Bali coast

Prafull’s tipLeave Munduk by 10 am to miss the worst of the traffic around Denpasar, and keep the afternoon free.

Breakfast

Day 7

Uluwatu

A free morning at the villa, or a swim at Melasti or Suluban beach below the cliffs. At about 5 pm your driver takes you to Uluwatu Temple for the walk along the cliff edge, about 70 metres above the surf, then the Kecak fire dance in the open-air amphitheatre at sunset. Afterwards, dinner at Jimbaran Bay if you would like seafood at a table on the sand, or straight back to the villa for a quiet last evening. Overnight in Uluwatu.

  • Melasti Beach
  • Suluban Beach
  • Uluwatu Temple
  • Kecak fire dance
  • Jimbaran Bay
  • Note: The Uluwatu monkeys snatch glasses, phones and sandals. Keep them out of reach.

Prafull’s tipSit in the upper rows of the amphitheatre, facing the sea. You see the dance and the sunset together.

Breakfast

Day 8

Uluwatu – Departure

About 25 km · 45 minutes–1 hour to the airport

Breakfast and a last swim in your pool, with the ocean below. Check-out is usually at noon; we ask for a late check-out where we can, which makes an evening flight much easier. Your driver collects you about three hours before your flight for the drive to Ngurah Rai airport, allowing for the slow traffic at the Jimbaran end of the peninsula. Check in, clear immigration and fly home with a suitcase full of coffee, spices and sarongs. Your holiday ends here.

  • Uluwatu cliffs
  • Ngurah Rai International Airport

Prafull’s tipKeep a change of clothes in your hand luggage if you swim before leaving; it is a long journey home.
