Itinerary (day wise)
A slower, deeper Rajasthan that runs from the lakes of Udaipur to the dunes of the Thar and back. Starting in Udaipur and ending in Jodhpur keeps every drive between about two and six hours, with a night by Kumbhalgarh's great walls, a night in Jaisalmer facing its living fort and one in a desert camp. It suits couples, families with older children and photographers who want the desert as well as the palaces.
Day 1Arrive Udaipur (2 Nights)
About 22 km from the airport · 40–45 minutes
Your driver meets you at Udaipur airport and takes you through the Aravalli hills into the city in a private car. Check in, have lunch and rest through the afternoon. In the late afternoon you walk down to the jetty for a boat on Lake Pichola as the sun sets behind the hills. From the water you see the City Palace stretched along the shore, the island palace of Jag Mandir and the white Lake Palace, with the ghats lighting up as you come back. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Udaipur.
- Lake Pichola
- Jag Mandir
- Lake Palace (from the water)
- City Palace (from the water)

- Note: The sunset boat is popular in season, so we reserve your slot in advance.
Prafull’s tipCarry a light shawl for the boat. It gets breezy on the water once the sun has gone.
Dinner
Day 2Udaipur
The City Palace with a local guide from its 9 am opening: courtyards, mirrored rooms and balconies built over four centuries by the Mewar rulers. Walk on to Jagdish Temple, a carved 17th-century Vishnu temple still in daily worship, and through the old city's lanes of painters' studios and silver shops to Gangaur Ghat. After lunch and a rest, your driver takes you to Saheliyon-ki-Bari, the 'garden of the maidens', and along Fateh Sagar Lake. In the evening, the Dharohar folk dance show at Bagore-ki-Haveli is a short walk from the ghat. Overnight in Udaipur.
- City Palace
- Jagdish Temple
- Gangaur Ghat
- Saheliyon-ki-Bari

- Note: Optional: the Dharohar folk dance show, around 7 pm, approx. ₹150–300 per person, paid at the door.

Day 3Udaipur – Kumbhalgarh (1 Night)
About 85 km · 2–2.5 hours by road
A late, easy start. The road climbs north into the Aravallis through farmland and small Mewari villages, and you check in to a resort below the fort in time for lunch. In the afternoon you explore Kumbhalgarh Fort, built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, whose walls run for about 36 km over the ridges. Walk up to the Badal Mahal for views across the hills towards the Thar, and see some of the many temples inside the walls. After dark, the fort's light-and-sound show tells its story. Overnight in Kumbhalgarh.
- Kumbhalgarh Fort
- Badal Mahal
- Kumbhalgarh walls
- Light-and-sound show

- Note: The walk up to Badal Mahal is steep in places; allow an hour and take water.
- Note: The light-and-sound show is in Hindi and runs in the early evening.
Prafull’s tipStay on the walls for the last hour of light. The ramparts turn amber and the crowds have gone.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 4Kumbhalgarh – Ranakpur – Jodhpur (1 Night)
About 215 km · 4.5–5 hours, plus time at the temple
A slow morning, then a short drive through the forested hills to Ranakpur, timed to reach the temple when it opens to visitors at midday. The 15th-century Chaumukha Jain temple is carved from pale marble, with more than 1,400 pillars and no two alike; spend an hour inside and have a simple vegetarian lunch nearby. Then west out of the hills and across the Marwar plains to Jodhpur, arriving in the early evening. Mehrangarh is floodlit on its rock above the blue city as you check in. Overnight in Jodhpur.
- Ranakpur Jain Temple
- Aravalli hills
- Mehrangarh Fort (first view)

- Note: Ranakpur opens to non-Jain visitors from about 12 noon to 5 pm. Leather items stay in the car, and shorts are not allowed.
- Note: There is a small fee for mobile phones and cameras inside the temple.
Prafull’s tipKeep a pair of socks in your bag. The temple floor is marble and gets hot by early afternoon.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 5Jodhpur – Jaisalmer (1 Night)
About 285 km · 5 hours by road
Mehrangarh Fort with your guide when it opens at 9 am. A lift saves the climb, the museum rooms hold palanquins, howdahs and painted ceilings, and the ramparts look down on the blue houses of Brahmpuri. Late morning you set off west into the desert, the villages thinning out and the land turning to scrub and sand. You reach Jaisalmer in the late afternoon and check in to a heritage hotel facing the golden fort. Sunset from Vyas Chhatri, the sandstone cenotaphs on the edge of town, if time allows. Overnight in Jaisalmer.
- Mehrangarh Fort
- Brahmpuri blue lanes
- Thar Desert
- Jaisalmer Fort (first view)
- Vyas Chhatri

- Note: The lift at Mehrangarh carries a small separate fee.
Prafull’s tipTake Mehrangarh's audio guide even with a guide; it is one of the best in India.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 6Jaisalmer – Desert camp (1 Night)
About 45 km · 1 hour to the dunes
A morning in Jaisalmer Fort with a local guide. People still live inside its walls, and you walk its narrow lanes to the carved Jain temples and the royal palace. Below the fort you see Patwon-ki-Haveli, five merchant houses with stone screens as fine as lace, and Gadisar Lake. After lunch you drive out to the dunes and check in to your tented camp. Late afternoon you ride a camel over the sand to watch the sun go down, then return for folk music and dancing around the fire, and dinner under the stars. Overnight at the desert camp.
- Jaisalmer Fort
- Jain temples of the fort
- Patwon-ki-Haveli
- Gadisar Lake
- Sam sand dunes
- Camel ride at sunset
- Note: The fort's Jain temples open to visitors in the morning only, until about noon.
- Note: Optional: a jeep ride over the dunes, booked and paid at the camp.

Breakfast & Dinner
Day 7Desert camp – Jodhpur (2 Nights)
About 330 km · 5.5–6 hours by road
Wake early for sunrise over the dunes, a short walk from your tent, then breakfast at the camp. You drive back east across the desert to Jodhpur, past Pokhran and long stretches of open scrub, with a lunch stop on the highway, arriving by mid-afternoon. The rest of the day is yours. Rest at the hotel, or walk through the blue lanes below Mehrangarh to Toorji ka Jhalra, the restored stepwell, as the evening light comes down and the fort is lit up above you. Overnight in Jodhpur.
- Sunrise over the dunes

In the morning you could see Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph below the fort, and the museum wing of Umaid Bhawan Palace, with its art deco rooms and vintage cars. Later, walk down to the Clock Tower and Sardar Market for spices, bandhani and mirchi vadas, or spend the afternoon by the pool. - Sardar Market
- Note: Optional: the zip-line course at Mehrangarh, booked a day ahead and paid locally.
- Note: Optional: Mandore Gardens, the old Marwar capital, about 20 minutes north of the city.
Prafull’s tipTry a makhaniya lassi near the Clock Tower in the late afternoon, then walk back up through the lanes as the lamps come on.
Breakfast & Dinner
Day 9Jodhpur – Departure
About 5 km to the airport · 20–30 minutes
Breakfast at leisure. With an afternoon flight, there is time for a last look at the old city or a visit to Mandore Gardens, the old capital of Marwar, with its red sandstone cenotaphs. Check-out is usually at noon, and we can request a late check-out from the hotel. Your driver collects you with plenty of time for the short drive to Jodhpur airport and your flight home, direct or via Delhi depending on the day. Your holiday ends here.
- Mandore Gardens
Prafull’s tipBuy spices and mawa kachori on your last morning, not earlier. They travel better fresh.

Good to know
- The desert is cold at night from December to February, sometimes close to freezing. Pack a warm jacket, cap and socks for the camp night.
- Desert camps have attached bathrooms, but hot water and power can be limited to set hours.
- Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at the door. At Ranakpur, leather goods are not allowed inside.
- Kumbhalgarh and Jaisalmer Fort involve steep walks on uneven stone; wear shoes with a good grip.
- Jodhpur has fewer flights than Jaipur or Udaipur. Book your return early, especially in December.
- Rajasthan is easy for vegetarians. Pure-veg and Jain meals are available at every hotel on this route; just tell us when you book.
When to go
