Itinerary (day wise)

Three of Assam's national parks: Manas on the Bhutan border, Nameri on the Jia Bhoroli river, with rafting, and Kaziranga's rhinos.

Day 1

Arrive Guwahati – Manas National Park

150 km / 5 hrs

Welcome to the North East. Your driver meets you at Guwahati airport or railway station and you drive west to Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tiger reserve on the border with Bhutan. The park is named after the Manas river, the largest Himalayan tributary of the Brahmaputra, and is known for tigers, the rare golden langur and birds such as the great hornbill, pheasants, scarlet minivets and the Bengal florican. Check in and spend the rest of the day around the resort.

No meals included today Overnight: Manas

Day 2

Manas National Park

An early start for an hour's elephant ride into Manas National Park (subject to availability), along narrow forest paths where the chance of seeing animals is best. Back to the resort for breakfast, then a half-day jeep safari through the park between Bansbari and Mathanguri. Later in the afternoon, a nature walk around the park.

  • Note: Jungle safaris in Manas open fully from 1 November. The park is partly open in October and May, at its best from November to April, and closed from June to September.

Breakfast Overnight: Manas

Day 3

Manas – Nameri

270 km / 7 hrs

After breakfast, drive to Nameri National Park on the Jia Bhoroli river, in the foothills of the Himalaya. It is a tiger reserve and one of Assam's best places for birds, with more than 300 species. Check in; the evening is free. A bonfire and traditional dances can be arranged at extra cost.

Breakfast Overnight: Nameri

Day 4

Nameri National Park

After breakfast, a two-hour rafting trip down the Jia Bhoroli river, watching for migratory waterbirds and, with luck, wild elephants or even a tiger on the banks. In the afternoon, a nature trail in the reserve with forest guides and armed guards, the best way to see Nameri up close, with a chance of the rare white-winged wood duck and the great hornbill.

Breakfast Overnight: Nameri

Day 5

Nameri – Kaziranga

90 km / 3 hrs

An early-morning walk along the edge of Nameri's forest, then back for breakfast. Check out and drive to Kaziranga National Park, home of the one-horned rhino. Check in, and the evening is yours.

Breakfast Overnight: Kaziranga

Day 6

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga is home to about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. At first light, ride an elephant into one zone of the park for the best chance of seeing rhino up close, along with hog deer, swamp deer, wild buffalo, wild elephants and, with luck, a tiger. The wetlands are full of pelicans, storks and darters. Back at the resort for breakfast, then a jeep safari through the park in the afternoon, and a visit to the Kaziranga Orchid Park. The middle of the day is free.

Day 7

Kaziranga National Park – Guwahati

220 km / 5 hrs

After breakfast, drive back to Guwahati, stopping at the Maha Mrityunjay Temple at Nagaon, built in the shape of a Shiva linga. Check in. In the evening you can take a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra (optional, paid directly).
