When to go
Best time to visit North East
October to April. October to April is dry and clear, the season for Kaziranga's safaris (the park is open November to April) and for the views in Meghalaya and Arunachal. December and January are cold in Shillong and freezing in Tawang, where Sela Pass can close after snow. The monsoon, June to September, fills Cherrapunjee's waterfalls but closes the national parks.
Our favourite months
Prafull's notes
- Hill roads in Meghalaya and Arunachal are slow: 60 km can take three hours. We keep long drives to one a day.
- Kaziranga's elephant and jeep safaris are run by the Forest Department and depend on availability; book early for December and January.
- Cherrapunjee and Dawki hotels are simple, and Tawang is freezing from December to February. Pack warm layers and good walking shoes.

North East questions
How many days do you need for the North East?
Four nights for Kaziranga or Shillong alone, five or six to combine Kaziranga with Meghalaya, and seven or eight for Tawang in Arunachal. Our longest trip covers Arunachal, Assam and Meghalaya in 12 nights.
When is Kaziranga National Park open?
Kaziranga is usually open from November to April, with the best wildlife viewing from February to April when the grass is short. It closes in the monsoon.
Do I need a permit for Arunachal Pradesh?
Yes. Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit, which we arrange if you send ID proof about 10 days before travel. Bum La Pass needs a separate army permit and depends on the weather.
Is GST included in the price?
Yes. Our North East prices include GST (5%), hotel taxes and a private car for the whole trip. Flights or trains to Guwahati are extra and quoted for your dates.
Which hotels are included?
Most packages come in four hotel categories: Super Deluxe, Superior, Premium and Luxury. Each package page lists the hotels in every town. In Cherrapunjee, Dawki, Dirang and Bomdila even the best hotels are simple.
Is the North East good for families and senior citizens?
Yes, with care. Kaziranga and Shillong are easy; Cherrapunjee's root-bridge trek involves about 3,200 steps each way, and Tawang is high and cold, so we suggest the shorter Meghalaya and Assam trips for older travellers.
