Itinerary (day wise)

Assam beyond the rhinos: Kaziranga, the river island of Majuli and its monasteries, the Ahom monuments of Sivasagar, and a boat into Dibru-Saikhowa.

Day 1

Arrive Guwahati – Kaziranga National Park

220 km / 5 hrs

Welcome to the North East. Your driver meets you at Guwahati airport or railway station and you drive east to Kaziranga National Park, home of the one-horned rhino, stopping at the Maha Mrityunjay Temple at Nagaon, built in the shape of a Shiva linga. Check in, and the evening is yours.

No meals included today Overnight: Kaziranga

Day 2

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga is home to about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. At first light, ride an elephant into one zone of the park for the best chance of seeing rhino up close, along with hog deer, swamp deer, wild buffalo, wild elephants and, with luck, a tiger. The wetlands are full of pelicans, storks and darters. Back at the resort for breakfast, then a jeep safari through the park in the afternoon, and a visit to the Kaziranga Orchid Park.

  • Note: Elephant rides and jeep safaris are run by the Assam Forest Department and depend on availability; we can't control the bookings.

Breakfast Overnight: Kaziranga

Day 3

Kaziranga – Jorhat via Majuli

After an early breakfast, drive 80 km to Nimatighat and cross the Brahmaputra by local ferry, about an hour depending on the water level, to Majuli, the world's largest river island. Majuli's satras, or monasteries, are the heart of Assam's Vaishnavite culture. Visit a satra, a potters' village and a mask-making village, where light masks of clay, bamboo and cloth are made for characters from the Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranas. Ferry back to Nimatighat in the afternoon and drive to Jorhat. The evening is free.

Breakfast Overnight: Jorhat

Day 4

Jorhat – Dibrugarh via Sivasagar

306 km / 7 hrs

After breakfast, drive to Dibrugarh by way of Sivasagar, the old capital of the Ahom kings, who ruled Assam for 600 years. See the tall Shiva Dol beside the great Borpukhuri tank, the Rang Ghar, the Ahom kings' royal pavilion for games and festivals, and the Talatal Ghar palace. Check in at Dibrugarh in the evening.

Day 5

Excursion to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

After breakfast, drive to Tinsukia and board a boat for Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, a maze of river channels and grassland known for the rare white-winged wood duck. The cruise stops on a sandbank, and lunch and evening tea are served on board. Back to Dibrugarh in the evening.
