Itinerary (day wise)

Six nights: Srinagar with day trips to Sonamarg and the quiet meadows of Doodhpathri, a night each in Pahalgam and Gulmarg, and a last night on a Dal Lake houseboat.

Day 1

Arrive in Srinagar, and a shikara ride

Airport to hotel · about 30 minutes

Welcome to Kashmir. Our representative meets you at Srinagar airport and takes you to your hotel. After a rest, visit the Shankaracharya temple, a Shiva shrine on a hilltop above the city. In the evening, an hour-long shikara ride on Dal Lake (included) past the floating vegetable gardens, the lotus beds and the little canal-side markets, with the Zabarwan hills behind. The evening is free.

Day 2

Day trip to Sonamarg

About 80 km each way · 2.5 to 3 hours

Drive up the Sindh valley to Sonamarg, the 'meadow of gold', through villages, paddy fields and pine forest beside the river. From Sonamarg, a local taxi or pony (paid there) takes you about 4 km to the Thajiwas glacier. Back to Srinagar for the night.

Day 3

Day trip to Doodhpathri

About 42 km each way · 1.5 hours

A quieter day at Doodhpathri, the 'valley of milk', a bowl of meadow in the Pir Panjal range with streams running through pine forest and snow peaks around it. Back to Srinagar for the night.

Day 4

Srinagar to Pahalgam

About 95 km · 2.5 to 3 hours

On the way, see the saffron fields of Pampore, the ruins of the Awantipora temples and the sulphur springs near Anantnag. Pahalgam, the 'valley of shepherds', sits where the Lidder river leaves the mountains; local union cabs (paid there) take you to Aru and Betaab valleys, or a pony to the snow point. Spend the rest of the day walking through the pine forest along the river. Night in Pahalgam.

Day 5

Pahalgam to Gulmarg

About 140 km · 4 hours

Drive across the valley to Gulmarg, the 'meadow of flowers'. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola (tickets extra; book early in season) up to Kongdori and, weather permitting, to Apharwat at about 4,000 m for the Himalayan peaks. In winter Gulmarg is India's best-known ski slope; the rest of the year its meadows and the 18-hole golf course, one of the highest in the world, are green. Night in Gulmarg.

In the evening, an hour-long shikara ride on Dal Lake (included) past the floating vegetable gardens, the lotus beds and the little canal-side markets, with the Zabarwan hills behind.
