When to go
Best time to visit Madhya Pradesh
October to March. October to March is cool and dry, the best time for forts, temples and the Pachmarhi hills. The national parks open on 1 October and close on 30 June; winter mornings in the parks are cold, and the forest thins out towards spring. April to June is very hot.
Our favourite months
Prafull's notes
- Jeep safaris in Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Satpura and Panna sell out early. They are booked with full payment and each guest's photo ID, and cannot be changed or refunded once booked.
- For the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar, book online about 15 days ahead (₹200, photo ID needed) and be in the queue by 2 am. We can help with the booking.
- Most of Pachmarhi is inside the national park, so sightseeing there is by local Gypsy, and the park closes on Wednesday afternoons.
Good to know
Madhya Pradesh questions
How many days do you need for Madhya Pradesh?
Three nights covers Ujjain and Omkareshwar, Bhopal and Sanchi, or Pachmarhi on its own. Five nights covers two tiger reserves, or Gwalior, Khajuraho and Orchha. Our longest trips run to 7 or 8 nights.
Which is better for tigers, Kanha or Bandhavgarh?
Both are among India's best-known tiger reserves. Bandhavgarh is smaller and known for its tigers and leopards; Kanha is larger, with open meadows and the rare hard-ground barasingha. Our Bandhavgarh and Kanha trip does both, two nights each.
Are jeep safaris included?
One Satpura safari is included in Sanchi and Satpura and in Pachmarhi and Satpura. On the other trips, safaris are booked in advance at extra cost, with full payment and photo ID, and are non-refundable once booked.
Is GST included in the price?
Yes. Our Madhya Pradesh prices include GST (5%), hotel taxes and a private car for the whole trip. Flights or trains are extra and quoted for your dates.
Which hotels are included?
Every package comes in three hotel levels: Standard (roughly 2-star plus), Deluxe (3 to 4 stars) and Premium (4 to 5 stars). Each package page lists the hotels in every town. City hotels include breakfast, Pachmarhi and Maheshwar breakfast and dinner, and the jungle lodges all meals.
Can you arrange the Bhasma Aarti or a special puja?
Yes. We can help you book the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar, and arrange special pujas such as the Maha Rudrabhishek at Mahakaleshwar or Omkareshwar at extra cost, subject to availability.
