100 km / 03 hrs
Welcome to the North East. Your driver meets you at Guwahati airport or railway station and you drive up to Shillong (4,900 ft), the hill capital often called the Scotland of the East, stopping at Umiam Lake at Barapani, a wide, calm reservoir ringed by pine-covered hills. Check in at Shillong.

- Note: Cherrapunjee and Dawki are beautiful but simple places. Even the best hotels are like a basic 3-star, some without fans, air-conditioning or lifts, with clean rooms and bathrooms and mostly non-vegetarian food (vegetarian choices are limited).
Breakfast Overnight: Cherrapunjee
Day 4Cherrapunjee Local Sightseeing
After breakfast, the trek down to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in the forest, two bridges grown from living fig roots, one above the other: 3 to 4 hours there and back, depending on your fitness. In the afternoon, Nohsngithiang (Seven Sisters) Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Ka Khoh Ramhah and the Eco Park. Optional: make it a full day at Nongriat village, about 3,200 steps each way, and continue to Rainbow Falls, 60 to 90 minutes beyond the bridge.

Breakfast Overnight: Kaziranga
Day 7Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga is home to about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. At first light, ride an elephant into one zone of the park for the best chance of seeing rhino up close, along with hog deer, swamp deer, wild buffalo, wild elephants and, with luck, a tiger. The wetlands are full of pelicans, storks and darters. Back at the resort for breakfast, then a jeep safari through the park in the afternoon, and a visit to the Kaziranga Orchid Park.

- Note: Elephant rides and jeep safaris are run by the Assam Forest Department and depend on availability; we can't control the bookings.
