Day 2

Kathmandu sightseeing

About 8 hours

A full day in the valley. Start at Pashupatinath on the banks of the Bagmati, Nepal's holiest Hindu temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where sadhus gather to pray. Then the great stupa of Boudhanath, the holiest Buddhist shrine in Nepal and a place of pilgrimage. Cross the river to Patan, the old city of Lalitpur, whose Durbar Square is packed with temples, and the Tibetan refugee centre, the place to buy a hand-knotted Tibetan carpet. Climb the steps to Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa with the painted eyes of the Buddha and a view over the city, and end at Budhanilkantha, where a great stone Vishnu lies asleep on a bed of serpents in an open-air pond.

Chandragiri Hills by cable car

17 km · about 6 hours

Drive to Thankot on the south-west edge of the valley and ride the 2.4 km cable car up to Chandragiri (2,551 m). On a clear day the view runs along the Himalaya from Annapurna to Everest, with the whole Kathmandu valley below. The cable car ticket, about ₹950 per person, is paid there. Later, time for Thamel, the city's lively tourist quarter of shops and cafes.

Day 4

Day trip to Bhaktapur and Nagarkot

35 km each way · about 6 hours

Drive to Bhaktapur, the least changed of the valley's old royal cities, where potters and weavers still work in the lanes. See the Palace of 55 Windows, the Golden Gate and the five-storey Nyatapola temple. Continue up to Nagarkot (2,175 m) on the valley rim for the view of the Himalaya, Everest among them on a clear day, then drive back to your hotel in Kathmandu.
